Stop Biting Finger Nails

"Old Habits Die Hard"

how to stop biting my nailsIf you’re struggling with trying to stop biting finger nails, I think I can relate to where you’re coming from. I used to have an all-out, on-going battle with nail biting for many years myself. Let me tell you – chewing on the nails and trying to play the guitar properly isn’t really the best of combinations.

Was I ever tempted to call it quits and just give in? You bet – more times than I care to think about. But somehow, I knew there had to be a solution – giving up on the guitar was not even an issue… So I just kept working on it. At least, through trial and error, I gradually over the years developed a style of using picks as well as the flesh of my fingers. Not classical guitar by any means, but hey, it works for me.

However the feeling of social stigma and a partial sense of unattractiveness was still there – wondering if people would notice my ugly nails and if they began to reflect on me being "nervous", "stressed", "bored" and all that. I’m sure you too have gone through the motions of hiding your hands whenever possible and being very cautious of how people looked at you?

Sure I noticed that I wasn’t alone of this habit; in fact I learned that this was indeed a quite common habit that people – young and old – could have. I also realized that it wasn’t just a matter of will power or "pulling myself together". Like most other habits, biting your nails can be very hard to put a stop to – a simple thing to do, but potentially very, very hard!

nail biting anxietyTrying to use the power of will alone could not accomplish changing the conditioned response – the habit of nail biting. Any potential change I got was always very temporary – never permanent. After a few happy days, it was back to the old habits again.

I probably must have tried everything under the sun – and then some… Stubborn is my middle name and I sure wasn’t going to let this no-good habit "win".

Putting on nail polish (even the bitter bitter ones) and feeling very "girly", wearing gloves, reading all sorts of tips and tricks and asking around … you name it, I’ve probably tried it.

stop chewing nailsEventually – probably in part because I got older – I began to realize that the subconscious mind (one strong "opponent" for sure) was involved and that there had to be secondary gains and deeper (more hidden) motives involved. I’m quite sure there are many reasons why we bite our fingernails. At least you can rest assured there are reasons!

As soon as I saw this, I could begin to work with it, as opposed to against it. I was able to identify the situations where I was prone to nail biting and find ways to work around it. In effect I suppose I was able to "program" more suitable responses into my subconscious mind.

Will this work for you? Since I’m just a regular guy – I just couldn’t say. The only thing I know is that people do quit their bad nail biting habits (and other habits of course) each and every day. And in order to help you on your way to stop biting finger nails, I have put together these pages. Hopefully you too will find the solutions that works wonders for you.
